In the wake of mothers day the telegraph has published the nine worst mothers in film history. I think they've got them all down, from Margaret White (Carrie 1979) to The Other Mother (Coraline 2009)Have they missed any out?
"The prom?" Margaret White repeats threateningly after her daughter, as a timely lightening strike illuminates her face at the gloomy dinner table. It’s a mark of how unusually used to physical punishment Carrie is, that she doesn’t even flinch when the next minute, her mother throws her mug of tea over her face: "You are not going." She seems to be always accompanied by either some form of Bible or butcher’s knife, and the scenes with both are equally terrifying. Whether she's locking Carrie in her dark attic to repent her sins after her traumatic first period, maniacally chopping carrots to a chorus of squealing violins, or stabbing her own daughter in the back, Margaret White is a strong contender for Worst Ever Film Mother.
